Basics and Beyond:

A Contemplative Approach to Spiritual Direction

At The Spiritual Life Center in the West end of Hartford with Oscar Brockmeyer

We invite spiritual companions, both new and seasoned, to join us for this contemplative workshop experience. Rooted in the Benedictine tradition, the workshops will help participants recognize the subtle inner movements that shape their responses. Come cultivate a receptive, grounded posture that encourages the seeker’s own

wisdom to emerge. This program will benefit anyone who wants to deepen presence and reduce unconscious steering.

As a participant, you will discover how presence, silence, curiosity, and trust create a spacious environment for authentic discernment. Together we will explore the “inner realm,” learn to distinguish three types of companion responses (contemplative, guiding, and controlling), and practice micro-skills that help the seeker stay close to their own unfolding experience. Through guided exercises, paired practice, and reflection on real-play companioning moments, the workshop teaches how to remain close to the seeker’s inner reality without intruding into their spiritual life.

By the end of the second workshop, you will have a clearer sense of your own tendencies and a richer appreciation for the seeker’s interior landscape. You will return home with practical tools for staying present without controlling, and a renewed confidence in the Spirit’s advocacy.
