In 1979, a group of dedicated volunteers gathered to consider: How can we enhance the spiritual life of those who are seeking deeper meaning and purpose? What would nurture the spirituality of those who serve others in the greater Hartford, Connecticut area? From these questions came the early seeds of a spiritual life center. Three years later, the seed had taken root when the Spiritual Life Center opened its doors in September 1982.
Since the beginning, people from different faith traditions and spiritual practices have come to the Center seeking spiritual direction and participating in programs for mutual support and growth. In 1988, the Spiritual Direction Internship was inaugurated to prepare those experiencing a call to the growing ministry of spiritual direction.
For the next ten years, that little seedling grew into an ever-expanding living thing. The community of staff, Board of Directors, spiritual directors and volunteers grew in number and diversity. In time, more individuals were needed to provide for spiritual programs, spiritual direction and supervision.
As the seasons turned, the plant became ripe for transplanting. In 2000, the Spiritual Life Center became a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the state of Connecticut. The following year the Center moved into its present home in Bloomfield, Connecticut. What began 25 years ago has continued to grow and flourish. With each new graduating intern, every newsletter, each spiritual direction session and peer supervision group, Board of Directors meeting or retreat, more seeds are planted and nourished.
